About Dr. Max Lay AM

Dr Lay is a director of ConnectEast, the publicly-owned company that built and operates the EastLink toll road in Melbourne, Australia. He was also part of the team that successfully bid to win the toll concession. Dr Lay is a Member of the Order of Australia and a Professorial Fellow of Melbourne University. In 2009 he was awarded the Gold Medal of the peak road industry body in Australia, Roads Australia. He is author of the international textbook - "Handbook of Road Technology" - which was issued in its 4th edition in 2009 by Spon in England. He is also author of "Ways of the World", the leading international history of roads published by Rutgers University Press in New Jersey. Dr Lay is a Fellow of Engineers Australia, the American Society of Civil Engineers and the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences. He has been associated with the design, construction and operation of many major motorways. He has been a strong advocate of road pricing and of building safety and aesthetic qualities into new roads. He is a past President of the Australian Automobile Association and of the Royal Automobile Club of Victoria.
